Fluoride Debate (May 15) and Vote (May 16) for Sudbury Water District

Source: Sudbury Patch | May 10th, 2017

There will be a vote on the issue of fluoridation at the annual Water District meeting on May 16, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the Sudbury Senior Center. You must be a customer of SWD to vote. On May 15, 2017 at 7 p.m., at the Community Room of Goodnow Public Library, there will be a talk on fluoride. You will have a chance to ask questions on this topic. Dr. Mike Dolan and Dr. Phyllis Mullenix will both talk and take questions from the audience.

Vote YES on May 16, 2017 at 7 pm at Senior Center to end fluoridation of SWD water!

SHOULD FLUORIDE BE IN THE WATER Putting a toxic chemical like fluoride in the water just to make a small difference and to be affecting so many body systems at the same time is not ethical and is not safe. The Food & Drug Administration accepts that fluoride is a drug, not a nutrient, when used to prevent disease. By definition, therefore, fluoridating water is a form of medication. The most obvious reason to end fluoridation is that it is now known that fluoride’s main benefit comes from topical contact with the teeth, not from ingestion. Even the CDC’s Oral Health Division now acknowledges this. We have no way of controlling the dose and people who drink more water or use other products that contain fluoride get more of it. People with kidney disease and endocrine or immune system problems may be more sensitive to fluoride.

WILL CAVITY RATES GO UP IF FLUORIDE IS NOT ADDED TO WATER? Tooth decay does not go up when fluoridation is stopped. Where fluoridation has been discontinued in communities from Canada, the former East Germany, Cuba and Finland, dental decay has not increased but has generally continued to decrease (Maupomé;2000). Modern large scale studies in the USA failed to find a meaningful difference in the cavity rates of fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. The Calgary study is a perfect example of the kind of dishonest statistics used by proponents. The pro-F authors used datasets from 7 years before fluoridation was discontinued to make the claim of increase in cavities in baby teeth, when most of the increase was during the time frame when the water was fluoridated.

IS FLUORIDE SAFE FOR THE BRAIN AND BODY? According to the National Research Council (2006), “it is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain.” In a review of the literature commissioned by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), fluoride has been listed among about 100 chemicals for which there is “substantial evidence of developmental neurotoxicity.” Animal experiments show that fluoride accumulates in the brain and alters mental behavior in a manner consistent with a neurotoxic agent (Mullenix 1995). In total, there have now been over 100 animal experiments showing that fluoride can damage the brain and impact learning and behavior. An animal experiment found effects at remarkably low doses (Varner 1998). In this study, rats fed for one year with 1 ppm fluoride in their water using either sodium fluoride or aluminum fluoride, had morphological changes to their kidneys and brains, an increased uptake of aluminum in the brain, and the formation of beta-amyloid deposits which are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. According to the U.S. NRC, “several lines of information indicate an effect of fluoride exposure on thyroid function.” According to a clinical study by Galletti the thyroid function of hyperthyroid patients was effectively reduced at just 2.3 to 4.5 mg/day of fluoride ion. To put this finding in perspective, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS, 1991) has estimated that total fluoride exposure in fluoridated communities ranges from 1.6 to 6.6 mg/day. This is a remarkable fact, particularly considering the rampant and increasing problem of underactive thyroid in the US and other fluoridated countries. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include depression, fatigue, weight gain, muscle and joint pains, increased cholesterol levels, and heart disease. Young boys had a five-to-seven-fold increased risk of getting osteosarcoma by the age of 20 if they drank fluoridated water during their mid-childhood growth spurt (age 6 to 8). The study was published in 2006 (Bassin 2006). I would propose a fund from the money saved by not adding Fluoride(Which in our case comes from Wego Chemical in China) be used to purchase and hand out for free Fluoride toothpaste to the people in town who want it! There should be at least $5000 allocated for that purpose. Please come to Goodnow Library on 5/15 at 7 pm for lecture on fluoride. Listed to experts, Dr. Mike Dolan and Dr. Phyllis Mullenix talk about the risks of Sodium Fluoride.
