Upgrades to EPCOR’s E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plant will take fluoride out of area water.

The company announced Sept. 3 that Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, parts of Edmonton, Onoway and other surrounding communities will see fluoride reduced or eliminated in water supply until March 2020.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that prevents tooth decay and has been added to area water since 1966. Water without it is safe to drink, but officials said people should take other actions to keep their teeth healthy during the time the plant is upgraded.

“We spoke to Alberta Health Services and it was felt seven months was not a significant enough interruption to put people at risk,” EPCOR Edmonton Water Treatment Plants Director Audrey Cudrak said. “We recommend people use a fluoridated toothpaste, take regular checkups from the dentist and avoid a lot of high-sugar foods.”

Cudrak added they have not heard many critical responses and suggested those concerned speak to their local communities first about any local decisions made in wake of the temporary closure. Spruce Grove and Stony Plain referred questions on the matter to EPCOR when contacted. For Cudrak, it is a little-noticed change.

“The water will not taste different and it will still meet all quality and safety standards,” she said.
