Today the Hamilton City Council Finance Committee approved a site at the Claudelands Events Centre for a public source of unfluoridated water with a capital cost of $70,000.

An existing natural shallow bore water supply at Taitua Arboretum, a few kilometres out of town past Dinsdale, was also endorsed as a suitable source of public unfluoridated water, which with the recent addition of a UV filter now achieves a ‘B’ grade with NZ Drinking Water Standards.

The Claudelands Event Centre option, which is in a very central city position, will achieve an ‘A’ grading and will be close to the northern end of the Claudelands grandstand. Reverse Osmosis (RO) was found to be the most appropriate treatment technology for this type of water filling station.

Fluoride Free Hamilton considers that each site has advantages and disadvantages for users and feels strongly that providing a RO water station in the central city as well as an alternative natural bore water site just outside the city limits, would satisfy everyone’s needs and requirements.

Fluoride Free Hamilton co-ordinator Pat McNair said, “We realise that most Hamilton residents would prefer Hamilton’s entire water supply unfluoridated but nonetheless Fluoride Free Hamilton is very pleased that residents will soon have two unfluoridated public water filling stations for their needs.”

“We consider it is the very LEAST that Hamilton City Council can do for us!”
