HUNTER Water has pleaded guilty to four offences in the Land and Environment Court where it was fined $187,000 on Friday for leaking fluoride from a distribution pipe in Dungog over a five-month period between April and August in 2014.

Acting chief executive Jeremy Bath said Hunter Water had pleaded guilty and apologised to the court and accepted the court’s decision.

“Hunter Water is committed to ensuring that all its operations are carried out in an environmentally responsible manner,” he said. Since the spill occurred, the fluoride storage and dosing facility at Dungog had been replaced at a cost of $1.5 million.

“We have spent a further $3.6 million upgrading our fluoride storage at water treatment plants throughout the region. We welcome the Court’s decision to allow the vast majority of the fine to be spent on an environmental project in the Dungog area.”
