LOGAN City Council is yet to make a decision as to whether fluoride will remain in the city’s water supply or not.
With fluoride no longer compulsory to communities with populations greater than 10,000 people, Council plans on seeking more information about these changes.
Roads and Water Infrastructure Committee Chairperson Councillor Don Petersen said the council would write to Seqwater for clarification on the changes.
“Logan does not have its own water supply so given the complexity of the Seqwater Grid serving the city, Council would be unable to make any decision in isolation,” he said.
It has been confirmed that any Council making a decision to cease fluoride treatment must pay the potable water supplier’s compliance costs.
“In our case this would be Seqwater costs of complying with the decision, including infrastructure costs.
“Council will shortly write to Seqwater, seeking details of the costs, as well as the technical and operational feasibility associated with any change to Logan’s current supply.”
Cr Petersen said if Council did vote in favour of removing fluoride, it could become “incredibly costly”.
“Councils need to ensure any decision has no adverse impact on other surrounding councils,” he said.
“We estimate it would be incredibly costly for Council to decide to cease fluoridation on its own. The reality is all in or all out. In the meantime, we will seek further details of the costs associated with any change before a report is brought back to a future Roads and Water Infrastructure committee for Council’s consideration.”
Fluoride had been included in the city’s water supply since 2009.
