Mayor Sam Adams announced on Twitter this afternoon that he’ll vote to fluoridate Portland’s water supply.

That makes three votes on City Council for Commissioner Randy Leonard’s surprise plan to add fluoride to city water, a process Portland has resisted for more than half a century.

“Please vote yes to fluoridate #PDX water,” Portland resident Matthew Smith wrote to the mayor on Twitter this morning.

“I will,” Adams replied at 2:37 pm.

Fluoride advocates, who brokered the deal with Leonard, didn’t know about Adams’ decision until told by WW.

“We are delighted,” said Raquel Luz Bournhonesque, co-director of Upstream Public Health—after she finished laughing and clapping. “That’s fantastic news. We commend him for making the right decision.”

A vote on fluoride has not been scheduled. The agenda for next week’s City Council meeting, released today, doesn’t include any mention of fluoridation—though a citizen named Charles E. Long is scheduled to begin the 9:30 am meeting with testimony “regarding Commissioner Leonard’s pernicious plot to poison Portland’s precious pure water supply.”
