Some citizens and city officials in Salina are at odds over the use of fluoride in the city’s water system.

Salina city commissioners opted to start adding fluoride to the city’s water in 1968.

Since that vote, many citizens have fought to get the chemical removed.

John Boesen, a volunteer with Salina Cares, says the use of fluoride in the water system is one that can prove to be harmful.

“It’s just important for us to convey that message with science and the demonstrated effects of long term fluoride ingestion, ” said Boesen.

Boesen proposed a town hall meeting be held to discuss the matter.  Some city officials feel there aren’t enough facts yet to make a change.

“I just think that a lot of their science is probably pretty baseless,” said Salina Vice Mayor Aaron Householter.

Householter agrees that a town hall meeting should be held.

A possible date for the meeting could be brought up during next Monday’s Salina City Commission meeting.
