Sarnia city council has said yes to keeping fluoride in local drinking water by the slimmest of margins.

A motion at Monday’s council meeting recommending removal of the additive. But when debate closed the measure ended up tied four votes to four.

In case of a tie vote the motion fails and by default council takes the position to keep fluoride.

Despite the murky procedural exercise, Coun. Terry Burrell, the chairperson of the Lambton Area Water Supply System (LAWSS) says he has a clear mandate.

Council does not want the change,” he said.

The water board has been asking all of its member municipalities for their take on fluoridation of the local water supply.
