The regional air pollution watchdog has postponed a Saturday public meeting in Torrance on commercially viable alternatives to the use of potentially lethal hydrofluoric acid at the Torrance refinery.

South Coast Air Quality Management District officials said Thursday that representatives of Norton Engineering, a consulting firm that authored the study, were unavailable this weekend and the meeting would be rescheduled.

Community concern over the use of hydrofluoric acid at the refinery has grown since a February 2015 explosion at the plant.

Federal officials said it was only by sheer chance the blast didn’t cause a catastrophic release of the highly toxic acid that could have killed or injured thousands.
