Yellow Springs Village Council votes 3-1 to end 50 years of fluoridation

On February 8, the Village Council passed the following Ordinance by a vote of 3-1.

VILLAGE OF YELLOW SPRINGS
ORDINANCE NO. 2011-02
AN ORDINANCE TO DISCONTINUE FLUORIDATING THE PUBLIC WATER SUPPLY
OF THE VILLAGE OF YELLOW SPRINGS

WHEREAS, the Village of Yellow Springs has fluoridated its public water supply for many years; and

WHEREAS, the Village has recently engaged in an extensive debate regarding the benefits and detriments of fluoridation; and

WHEREAS, the debate regarding fluoridation has been extraordinarily detailed and vigorous, including representation by both opponents and proponents of fluoridation at the highest level; and

WHEREAS, the Village Council has considered the issues raised and now wishes to change the existing policy of the Village of Yellow Springs.

NOW, THEREFORE, be it ordained by the Council of the Village of Yellow Springs, Ohio as follows:

Section 1. The Village of Yellow Springs shall terminate fluoridation of its public water supply effective May 1, 2011. The Village Manager is authorized to take all steps necessary to implement this new policy.

Section 2. This Ordinance shall go into effect at the earliest period allowed by law.

Note: Yellow Springs began fluoridation of its drinking water in December 1959.
