NOTES:

1. The maximum contaminant level for naturally occurring fluoride is 4 parts per million (ppm), and the recommended upper limit for fluoride – adjusted (added) water supplies is 2 ppm. Fluoride is added to strengthen tooth enamel chemical structure and to reduce tooth decay (dental caries). The optimal concentration of fluoride in New Jersey drinking water is 0.9 ppm in the southern part of the State, and 1.0 ppm in the northern part of the State, with an acceptable range of 0.8 – 1.4 ppm (southern) and 0.9 – 1.5 ppm (northern).

2. West Deptford Township Water Department (natural fluoride concentrations in water, range from 1.05 – 1.37 ppm) purchases water from New Jersey American Water Company to supplement their ground water supplies. Currently, this purchased water is delivered to three of the six treatment plants and is blended with the naturally fluoridated water from the West Deptford Township Water Department. The water delivered to customers from these three plants contains sub-optimal concentrations of fluoride (concentrations range from 0.57 – 0.76 ppm).
