• 2020: Levels of Fluoride in the State’s Drinking Water and Fluoridation Status: 199 Public Water Systems with fluoride levels over 0.71 ppm.

• 17 public water systems over 4.0 ppm
• 32 systems 3.0 ppm to 3.99 ppm
• 53 systems 2.0 ppm to 2.99 ppm
• 70 systems 1.0 ppm to 1.99 ppm
• 29 systems 0.71 ppm to 0.99 ppm

Virginia’s FLUORIDATION LAW:

  • Virginia Administrative Code 5-590-930 provides that “where practicable and feasible, the state board of health may require owners of waterworks to provide artificial fluoridation.”  It also appears that local governments can start fluoridation programs once they have received approval from the Virginia Division of Water Supply and Engineering.  To learn more about this law, click here.

Community Date

Amherst County stopped in 2011 and resumed in 2014.

NOTE: Sadly, in 2014, the Amherst County Service Authority board decided to resume fluoridation at its water filtration plant in Madison Heights, They ceased fluoridation in 2011 and in 2013 they voted not to resume the practice.

FLUORIDE POLLUTION SOURCES IN VIRGINIA:

In 2008, Virginia ranked #20 out of 48 states for Hydrogen Fluoride releases (1,115,804 pounds). Virginia industry also emitted 666 pounds of Fluorine into the environment. The following data comes from EPA’s Toxic Release Inventory (TRI). “Total releases” includes both water and air pollution. It’s important to note, however, that not all industries or sources that release fluoride into the environment are included in the TRI.
