Abstract
Endemic fluorosis is a systematic disease. We investigated the serum free fluoride, thyroid hormones and TSH concentrations in 37 cases. Significantly lowered serum T4 and T3 and increased TSH were found in patients. Patients’ serum rT3 concentrations were not significantly different from the controls. Significant negative correlations were found between serum free fluoride concentrations and T3 concentrations or T3/T4 ratios. We proposed that fluoride intoxication might decrease the thyroid function and suggested the method of prevention and treatment of this condition.

Effects of chronic fluorosis on thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and protein-bound iodine in cows
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of chronic fluorosis in cows on their blood serum levels of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and protein-bound iodine (PBI). Data collected from twenty cows with chronic fluorosis in the Tendurek Mountain region (altitude about 2000 m) in East Anatolia, Turkey, were compared

The effects of fluoride on thyroid hormones in rabbits
In this study, our objective was to determine blood T3, T4, and TSH levels in rabbits, which were administered fluoride chronically. Twenty one male rabbits were divided into three groups. The rabbits in group I (control), group II and III were administered, respectively, normal drinking water (containing 0.07 ppm fluoride),

[Effects of fluoride on the thyroid morphology and thyroid peroxidase and serum thyroid hormones].
Objective To observe the effects of fluoride on thyroid morphology, thyroid peroxidase and serum thyroid hormones. Methods One - month ablactating SD rats were randomly divided into three groups:the control group, low-fluoride group, middle-fluoride group, high-fluoride group, fed with water containing different fluoride concentration by adding NaF respectively. Rats were sacrificed after

[The change of thyroid functlon from the children with fluoride aluminum combined toxicosis in Shuicheng Area of Guizhou].
The levels of serum T3, T4 and TSH were analyzed in the children with fluoride aluminum combined toxicosis in Shuicheng area of Guizhou as compared with the children without fluoride-aluminum combined toxicosis. The results showed that serum T4 content decreased in the children with fluoride aluminum combined toxicosis (103.9±15.9 nmol/L

The effects of high levels of fluoride and iodine on intellectual ability and the metabolism of fluoride and iodine.
The authors carried out a study on the intellectual abilities and fluoride/iodine metabolism of children living in a high fluoride-high iodine area. Among the results: the percentage of the general population living in this fluoride/iodine-contaminated region that suffered from goiter (clinical thyroid enlargement) was 3.8%, the rate of children already showing some thyroid

Fluoride's Impact on Thyroid Hormones
Up through the 1950s, doctors in Europe and South America prescribed fluoride for this purpose in patients with hyperthyroidism. (Merck Index 1968). Fluoride was selected as a thyroid suppressant based on findings dating back to the mid-19th century that fluoride is a goitrogen (a substance that can cause goiter). When used as

The Relationship Between Fluoride Exposure & Goitre in South Africa
As a general rule simple goitre, irrespective of the cause, can be very, or fairly, satisfactorily combated by an adequate increase in man's daily iodine intake, except when the enlargement of the gland is due to the ingestion of excessive amounts of fluorine. The only correct solution to fluorine-induced endemic goitre is the removal of this element from the drinking water.

Fluoride Aggravates Thyroid Damage Caused by Excess Iodine Intake
Chinese researchers have found that the combination of excess fluoride with excess iodine caused greater reductions in IQ, or greater increases in goitre than either scenario by itself.

Mikhailets (1996): Functional state of thyroid under extended exposure to fluorides
Abnormalities in the thyroid function characterized by a decreased iodine absorption function of the thyroid, a low level T3 syndrome, and a slight increase of the TSH level are observed in cases of chronic fluorine intoxication in the industrial workers.

Is fluoride-induced hyperthyroidism a cause of psychosis among East African immigrants to Scandinavia?
When people with a compensated fluoride-induced hypothyroidism move to a low-fluoride area, the fluoride-induced inhibition of the production of thyroid hormones ceases. In Scandinavia, the dietary intake of iodine is usually quite high due to iodized table salt and easy access to marine fish. Under these conditions, the elevated capacity for production of thyroid hormones may result in hyperthyroidism.
