RESIDUAL TOXICITY OF CYFLUTHRIN WETTABLE POWDER AGAINST TRIBOLIUM CONFUSUM EXPOSED FOR SHORT TIME INTERVALS ON CONCRETE

Interpretive Summary:
Insecticide treatments inside milling and storage facilities are often necessary to control infestations of the confused flour beetle. Currently the wettable powder (WP) formulation of the insecticide cyfluthrin (trade name Tempo) can be applied to concrete floors at two spray rates, depending on the severity of the infestation. The confused flour beetle is susceptible to cyfluthrin, but mortality at these application rates will depend upon the time the beetles are exposed on the treated concrete. In general, survival decreases as the time of exposure increases, and beetles that may have been active immediately after they were exposed to the insecticide often died within a week. As residues begin to break down, longer exposure times are required for complete control. Warehouse managers can use this information to determine which application rate of cyfluthrin is best for their individual situation, depending on the desired residual control.
