Bayer Acquires Ownership of FLINT® Foliar Fungicide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bayer Corporation announces the Federal Trade Commission has approved the acquisition of the strobilurin fungicide FLINT® from Novartis Corporation. The acquisition gives Bayer global ownership of intellectual property rights, registrations and trademarks, as well as production and formulation information for the entire FLINT product line.

FLINT is a broad-spectrum foliar fungicide with a high margin of efficacy even at low application rates, making it suitable for use on a wide range of crops.

"FLINT is a perfect complement to our portfolio of broad-spectrum crop protection products," said Rick Kraus, fungicide market manager for Bayer Corporation Agricultural Products Division. "The addition of FLINT positions us as the technology leader in the field of fungicides."

The active ingredient in FLINT, Trifloxystrobin, has high levels of activity against many fungal pathogens within the Ascomycete, Deuteromycete, Basidiomycete, and Oomycete classes. FLINT is particularly effective against powdery mildews and leaf and fruit spots in crops such as pome fruit, grapes and cucurbits.

Bayer has registrations in the United States for FLINT on grapes, pome fruit, cucurbits, potatoes, tomatoes, almonds and hops.

"Fruits and vegetables are already strong markets for Bayer," said Kraus. "Our acquisition of FLINT gives us an even greater competitive strength in these key segments."

In addition to FLINT, Tryfloxystrobin will be marketed by Bayer in the United States under the trade names COMPASS® for turf and STRATEGO® for other crops yet to be confirmed. Registrations for FLINT on additional crops are expected in the near future.
