The Journal of the American Medical Association’s on Pediatrics (JAMA Pediatrics) published the second U.S. government-funded Mother-Offspring study linking the pregnant woman’s fluoride urinary levels to cognitive deficits in the offspring. (The first study was by Bashash et al., 2017.)
The Study: Association Between Maternal Fluoride Exposure During Pregnancy and IQ Scores in Offspring in Canada
Authors: Green R, Lanphear B, Hornung R, Flora D, Martinez-Mier EA, Neufeld R, Ayotte P, Muckle G, Till C. This team, centered at York University in Ontario, Canada, looked at 512 mother-offspring pairs from six major Canadian cities.
Funding: This study was funded by a grant from the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (grant R21ES027044). The Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals Study was supported by the Chemicals Management Plan at Health Canada, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (grant MOP-81285).
Results: The study found that a 1 mg per liter increase in the concentration of fluoride in mothers’ urine was associated with a 4.5 point decrease in IQ among boys, but not girls. When the researchers measured fluoride exposure by examining the women’s fluid intake, they found lower IQs in both boys and girls: A 1 mg increase per day was associated with a 3.7-point IQ deficit among both genders.
