The Abilene City Council gathered Thursday morning to have the first meeting of the new year, despite the snow and wintry weather.

The big item on the agenda was the final reading and action on permanent termination of fluoridation in the city’s water supply.

After much discussion, the ordinance to end fluoridation was passed with five votes in favor and two in opposition of the permanent suspension.

The discontinuation will occur after a 60-day notice of termination is sent out to all city water utility customers and to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

The decision to permanently discontinue fluoridation follows the council’s previously approved temporary suspension on Sept. 30.
