Hogenakkal water scheme, a fluorosis mitigation drinking project benefitting the drought-prone north-western districts, has once again become a poll issue.

While Chief Minister Jayalalithaa took credit for the scheme at a campaign rally in Dharmapuri on Wednesday, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin said it was the DMK government that completed 90 per cent of the project.

“Even now 50 per cent of the targeted population has not been benefitted by the scheme,” he said in a statement. Reacting to Ms. Jayalalithaa’s statement that her government had sent proposals to the Centre in 1994 and 2003, Mr. Stalin said that the scheme found mention only in the policy notes of the AIADMK government in 2001-02 and 2002-03.

“Nothing was done for the project during 2001-06,” he said. Mr. Stalin said that he led a team to Japan to secure the funding, and recalled the numerous visits to the project site to expedite work.
