Andrews Fluoride & Arsenic Treatment Plant, located in Andrews, Texas, will soon receive a new fluoride removal system that enables the city to remove elevated levels of both fluoride and arsenic to below minimum drinking water standards of 2.0 ppm.

Provided by Severn Trent Services, a global supplier of water and wastewater treatment solutions, the SORB 09™ fixed-bed adsorption technology removes fluoride from the water onto solid activated alumina. Containing a capacity to treat up to 5,000 gallons of water per minute, the system will be conducted with a downward flow through four adsorber vessels in parallel configuration.

The SORB 09 treatment was chosen based on the performance of an on-site pilot test that demonstrated its robust capabilities. The system will be commissioned in early 2015 by consulting engineer Jacob & Martin Ltd., and upon completion, the Andrews Fluoride & Arsenic Treatment Plant will be the largest fluoride treatment plant in the United States, doubling the capacity of the nation’s current largest fluoride treatment plant.

“High levels of fluoride can cause major bone structure complications and lead to teeth discoloration,” said John Dyson, Americas sales director for Severn Trent Services. “We are grateful for the opportunity to work with the city of Andrews and Jacob & Martin on this premier installation to ensure quality water is provided to the city’s residents.”
