TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A law signed into law last month by Gov. Ron DeSantis will remove fluoride from public water supplies in Florida by the end of June.

In a statement on the City of Tallahassee’s website, Tallahassee Utilities confirmed they will follow the new law and will stop adding fluoride to water by July 1.

“The Florida Department of Health now recommends against community water fluoridation, and in spring 2025, the Florida Legislature passed Senate Bill 700 (SB700), which bans the addition of fluoride in public water systems. Thus, the City will no longer be adding fluoride to its water system,” the statement says.

The Florida Dental Association has been against removing fluoride from water since the conversation surrounding the removal of fluoride from water began.

The association’s president, Dr. Jeffrey Ottley, said the state’s dentists remain “extremely frustrated,” and he said it may take a year or two to see health impacts from fluoride’s removal.

He said, looking forward, everyone will need to listen to their dentist’s recommendations to keep up their oral health.

”Brushing and flossing 2-3 times a day for two minutes. Flossing every day and then decrease the sugar in your diet. And real important is making sure you don’t eat again- carbohydrates, snacks that kind of food- after you brush but before you go to bed,” he said.

For those looking for added protection, he said toothpaste has fluoride, but the benefit only lasts a few minutes.

He recommends prescribing fluoride supplements for his patients who are children.

As for adults, he says getting fluoride gels from their dentist is the best bet.
