The Fluorides Awards Committee is pleased to present our Fluoridation Merit Award given to recognize “an outstanding contribution toward the progress of fluoridation” to:

Ernest Newbrun, BDS, DMD, PhD, Professor Emeritus
As the dedication in ADA’s 2018 Fluoridation Facts notes, Dr. Ernest Newbrun is a respected researcher, esteemed educator, inspiring mentor and tireless advocate for community water fluoridation. Dr. Newbrun, Professor Emeritus at the University of California San Francisco (USCF), earned two dental degrees, the first from the University of Sydney in 1954 (BDS) and the second from Alabama in 1959 (DMD). Additionally, he earned a MS from Rochester in 1957, a PhD in biochemistry from UCSF in 1965 and a Certificate in Periodontology from USCF in 1983. An internationally recognized expert on fluorides, oral biology, cariology and periodontology, Dr. Newbrun has served as a consultant to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, Food and Drug Administration, American Dental Association, Dental Health Foundation (California) and Pan American Health Organization. He has served as a reviewer for 27 different journals and presented his research findings at more than 75 international conferences and many additional national and regional meetings. A prolific author, Dr. Newbrun has 116 articles indexed by PubMed spanning six decades. Additionally, he authored the textbook, Cariology, and was editor and authored several chapters of Fluorides and Dental Caries. Over the years, Dr. Newbrun has received numerous honors including honorary degrees from the University of Lund, Sweden and the University of Sydney, Australia. In additional to serving as President of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), Dr. Newbrun received the IADR Research Award in Dental Caries, a Council’s Choice Award from ADA’s Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations as well as an ADA Presidential Citation. He is an Honorary Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health (ABDPH) which was awarded for his outstanding contributions to dental public health. Dr. Newbrun has worked to support community water fluoridation through research, publications, lectures, expert testimony and grassroots campaign involvement He is the Founder of the Dental Health Foundation (California) and served on the Board of Directors and as the Chairman for many years. Recognizing his unparalleled expertise, the American Dental Association asked Dr. Newbrun to serve on its National Fluoridation Advisory Committee (and its precursor the National Advisory Committee on Fluoridation) for more than 25 years. Most recently, he was an active member of the Fluoridation Advisory Committee, Department of Health Services, in Sonoma County, California.
