Bedford Mayor Dave Hodgson is working to prevent fluoride being re-introduced to the water supply when an upgrade to a treatment plant is complete.

His move comes after campaign group End Fluoride In Beds handed in a petition and addressed a council meeting last week.

A Bedford Borough Council spokesperson said while there is an ongoing agreement between the Secretary of State and Anglian Water for local fluoridation, this is currently suspended.

She added the Mayor is writing to Public Health England and Anglian Water to request fluoride is not re-introduced to the local water supply pending the outcome of an imminent review by the council’s adult services and health overview and scrutiny committee and its recommendations.
