BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WNDU) – Benton Harbor commissioners voted unanimously against a state request to put fluoride back into the city’s drinking water, according to our reporting partners at The Herald-Palladium.

Fluoride was paused in the water system about two years ago during lead line replacements and plant upgrades.

Michigan environment and health agencies point to decades of data showing fluoride cuts tooth decay and is safe at recommended levels.

The mayor and mayor pro-tem say they haven’t heard directly from state scientists. They are questioning possible health impacts on the brain and argue Benton Harbor shouldn’t be forced to have fluoride in its water when many other cities skip out on it.
