Brunei: Safe Fluoridated Water For All

Bandar Seri Begawan – The Public Works Department through the Department of Water Services will be providing 98 per cent of the population with fluoridated water by June this year.

This will be made possible through the introduction of fluoridated water through its network treatment plants in all four districts, namely Tasek, Mangkubau, Bukit Barun, • Layong, Seria, Sumbiling and Batang Duni Water Treatment Plants.

Currently all water treatment plants, except the one in Tasek, provides the nation with fluoridated water. However, fhe Tasek Water Treatment PLant is expected to produce fluoridated water to the population by June this year.

As supplier of potable water to 99.9 per cent of the Brunei population, the department, in its effort to support oral health in the Sultanate, will continue to monitor fluoride levels in the water systems, said a press statement that was issued by the department earlier.

Accredited with the ISO 17025, the department will continuously support the department of dental services in achieving their goals. As stated by the Director General of Medical Services, Ministry of Health, Dr Hjh Norlila Dato Paduka Hj Abd Jalil during the forum on fluoride toothpaste fluoridated water would be supplied to 95 per cent of the population by the year 2012.

As part of its initiative, the laboratory of the department of water services is working closely with the department of dental services to continuously monitor fluoride levels in the water treatment plants as well as water from the consumer taps to support the targeted goals set by the ministry of health in improving and maintaining the oral health status of the country. — Courtesy of The Brunei Times
