Miami—A champion for fluoridation and a dedicated public servant for three decades, Dr. Scott Presson has received a Council’s Choice Award from the ADA Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations.
The council presented the award April 28 during the National Oral Health Conference in Miami.
Dr. Presson retired from the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service in July 2007, after a career that spanned 30 years. During the last nine years of his career, Dr. Presson served as team leader for the Program Services Team in the Division of Oral Health at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Under Dr. Presson’s leadership, CDC worked in many ways to support state fluoridation programs, improve quality of fluoridation, improve monitoring systems, strengthen partnerships for both promotion and technical aspects and address emerging policy and science issues. In 2005, Dr. Presson led the CDC team that worked in partnership with the ADA to support and co-sponsor the National Fluoridation Symposium in Chicago.
“During the nine years I worked with CAPIR, council staff and the National Fluoridation Advisory Committee, I feel the partnership between ADA and CDC to expand and maintain community water fluoridation was strengthened and enhanced,” said Dr. Presson. “The highly successful National Fluoridation Symposium 2005, which celebrated the 60th anniversary of water fluoridation, exemplifies that partnership at its finest. We’ve made significant progress in fluoridating a number of large cities in recent years, but ongoing efforts are needed to protect those gains. I thank the council for recognizing my efforts with this award; it is deeply gratifying to be honored by your peers.”
The Council’s Choice Award is given to an individual, organization, corporation and/or program that has made a significant contribution to the council’s mission and goals in the areas of access and community affairs, fluoridation and preventive health activities and institutional and interprofessional affairs.
