CHAMBERSBURG – The Chambersburg Borough Council will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at 100 South Second Street.

The agenda is pretty meaty tonight.

On the consent agenda is Fourth of July sponsorship opportunities.

Chambersburg Council Member Austin Rosenbaum said, “This is something I’m going to hit really hard this year, as we want to have a great big celebration of America 250 for our Fourth of July, so we need business sponsors to come and help out and be sponsors for the fireworks show. We haven’t done much of this in the past, but it’s something we’re bringing forth with our new rec director, and we want to have some big sponsors for Fourth of July. So look out for that.”

There will also be a water utility presentation.

Rosenbaum said, “There’s two different things in this presentation. First, we’re already bringing up repainting the exterior of Nitterhouse tank along Interstate 81 and so there’s a presentation on whether we should do that, the costs associated with it. Is it going to be beneficial or not? And so there will be a presentation on that. Then secondly, we are going to be looking at our water treatment system, and the chemical feed system is getting towards, I believe, the end of its life, from what I was told. We’re going to talk about fluoride, whether we should continue fluoride in our water or not. I know that’s a very controversial issue. There’s 50% of people want it in, and 50% typically don’t want it in. So I’ve already gotten a ton of emails. I don’t think we’ll probably make a decision on that tonight. I think it’s just an early stage presentation. We can all talk to different people in the community and see what their thoughts are on it, and learn a lot more ourselves on it.”

Michele Jansen of News Talk 103.7FM said, “I want to get back to that fluoride argument. Now, I know it’s a big thing in this country, is to argue against you shouldn’t be adding anything to water, but honestly, the overwhelming evidence that fluoride in water reduces oral cavities and disease, it’s overwhelming, and people have to realize tooth decay is nothing small when it comes to your health. It’s not just about a matter of getting a cavity filled. It can lead to lifetime health problems, and in older folks, and even in younger folks, can lead to heart disease and all kinds of issues. Now, the one big thing you’re going to hear these days, and you probably hear it from somebody protesting putting fluoride in the water tonight, oh, it shows that the IQ of children is reduced. No, that is not true. There are meta studies that show it would have to be higher exposure than the exposure any child in the United States gets to fluoride, and even then, it’s only a couple studies that sort of showed it, it is not overwhelming evidence that that is the case. So I think that’s just a bogus argument for some. Dentists, I will be surprised if you don’t get a bunch of dentists there that are saying, no, you really should not take this out of drinking water.”

Rosenbaum said, “I’ll be honest. I am not a typical politician, and I am not going to promise I’m an expert in everything, and I’m not an expert on fluoride and drinking water. So it’s something that I’ll plan to talk to some dentists that I know, some other doctors I know, and look at studies and just people in the community to get their thoughts. And so I’ll be well versed. And hopefully we can make a decision down the road, and I don’t want to make a quick one tonight, so hopefully we can, we can eventually do that.”
