CHAMBERSBURG- The Board of Health is mulling a possible recommendation to Chambersburg Borough Council regarding the municipality’s current use of fluorination in their water supply.
The Board will hear a report on Thursday, April 9th from the Borough Water Utility about the condition of the chemical feed system at the Julio D. Lecuona Water Treatment Plant, which may lead Town Council to change the current policy on introducing fluoride into the Borough’s public water supply.
The cost of replacing this mechanical system that accomplishes fluoridation is significant and optional. Currently, the Borough spends tens of thousands of dollars in chemicals a year to provide the service for their customers. Recently, Borough Councilmember Austin Rosenbaum told News Talk 1037FM that, “the cost associated with (updating equipment) is around $250,000 and then also, if we keep it in it’s another $40,000 to $50,000 a year that we have to spend to keep it up and running and buy the chemicals and all that.”
As of February when the issue was brought up before Borough Council, Rosenbaum said that, “I’m still looking at that still, there were some people from the public that came in, about three or four people that spoke. They were actually, I believe, all former council members that came in and spoke, and they all were in favor of keeping it, but I know there’s some people that reached out to me that couldn’t make it last night, that are in favor of getting rid of it.”
The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 9th at 6pm in Council Chambersburg of the First Floor of the Utility Departments Addition to Borough Hall.
