COFFS Harbour’s water supply is due to be fluoridated by the end of May.

A Department of Public Health spokesperson said fluoride will be added once the new plant at Karangi is commissioned. Once the process begins, water quality will be tested daily.

One milligram of fluoride per litre (one part per million) will be added to the drinking supply to ensure the on-going health of teeth. Over the past week, Coffs Harbour City Council sent out an information pack regarding the implementation of the new system.

The fact sheet states: “Coffs Harbour’s water supply is to be fluoridated according to a directive of the NSW Health Department.”

For any residents wishing to seek further information on the directive, the council leaflet refers to the appropriate Act being; “Section 6A of the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies Act 1957, published in the Official Notices of the NSW Government Gazette No. 131, on August 6, 2004. The order was made following advice to the Department by the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies committee.”

In the weeks and months ahead, all homes connected to the town water supply between Sawtell and Corindi will be using fluoridated water.

Water will be gravity fed from Karangi Dam to the Coffs Harbour Water Filtration Plant.

Water will be conditioned using lime and CO2.

Solids and algae will be removed by dissolved air filtration and filtration process, with the assistance of filtration aids.

Stage one disinfection is by ultra violet light irradiation, then disinfection by chlorine.

After fluoridation, water is to be stored on site and then pumped to Red Hill Balance Tank for distribution.Treatment process
