A group of concerned residents believes everyone should have the choice to consume fluoride, but it is a choice they aren’t being given.
The group formed The Cape Fear Citizens for Safe Drinking Water and is encouraging other residents to join in to ask the CFPUA to remove fluoride from Wilmington area water.
“Fluoride is delivered without our consent – in a way that wouldn’t be responsible with how a physician would deliver it,” ” said Evan Folds, President of Progressive Gardens.
According to the group who founded stopfluoride.com, an excess of fluoride combined with a deficit of other nutritional elements can cause issues like cancer and thyroid issues.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “community water fluoridation has been a safe and healthy way to effectively prevent tooth decay. CDC has recognized water fluoridation as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.”
The Cape Fear Citizens for Safe Drinking Water disagree and said people spit out fluoride in its purest form in toothpaste so it should not be ingesting in water, where it is not in pure form.
The CFPUA said the amount of fluoride added to the water is regulated by the Environmental Protection agency and it is not nearly enough to be harmful.
Cities across the country have the option of whether or not to add fluoride in their water. Some cities like Portland and Tucson have chosen not to fluoride their water.
