Hamilton City Council is taking a three-week break from fluoridating the city’s drinking water due to potential “corrosive” qualities detected in the chemical additive.

However, the quality and safety of Hamilton’s water was not at all compromised – rather, it was the areas where the council stored its fluoride, before adding it to the water, that were at risk.

In an announcement on Friday afternoon, the council said its fluoride supplier had found a recent delivery of the treatment product had differences in the chemical composition which could lead to “increased corrosion in council’s storage facility”.
