DEFOREST, Wis. (WKOW) – The Village of DeForest has decided against reintroducing fluoride into its water system. The DeForest board voted 3-3, ultimately rejecting the resolution to bring fluoride back.

Several residents voiced their opinions at the meeting. While most in attendance were opposed the reintroduction of fluoride, a few supported it. Mark Stork was among those in favor.

“I strongly urge you tonight to move forward, to continue this journey and to get more detailed information, to bring back something that we had and no one had any issues with until it came up,” Stork said.

The majority of residents, however, urged the board to wait for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to complete its ongoing research.

“This is not about preventing it forever. It’s about pausing action until the facts are fully known and the legal process is complete, once funds are spent in system to modify those decisions cannot easily be undone,” said Bernard Coxhead.

Coxhead, a DeForest resident, has filed a lawsuit against the board, seeking a temporary restraining order or injunction.

Coxhead says that the board’s decision is a small victory, but he’s still cautious. He believes the board might revisit the fluoride issue in future meetings if his lawsuit is dismissed.
