DEFOREST, Wis. — The DeForest Village Board could vote Tuesday to remove fluoride from the community’s drinking water.

The board is slated to discuss resolution on whether to remove the mineral and could take action during its regularly-scheduled meeting. The village’s Public Services Committee voted 5-2 last month in favor of removal.

Fluoride has been in drinking water across the U.S. for over 75 years. The mineral has been shown to reduce tooth decay and its use is backed by the CDC, National Institutes of Health and Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

Some members of the Village Board, however, argued that keeping fluoride in drinking water is not safe. They cited an opinion piecepublished in the Washington Post as well as a ruling by a California judge in a lawsuit against the EPA.

Board members also said the village can save money by not having to buy hydrofluorosilicic acid or replace aging equipment needed to add fluoride to water.

Tuesday’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the DeForest Commons, 120 S. Stevenson Street.
