Dietitians New Zealand qualifications do not impress in the debate on Water

Dietitians New Zealand are misguided in their support of water fluoridation and the value of their post-graduate qualifications credibility will be called into question over that support. They certainly do not understand the concept of informed consent to dental treatment by calling for water fluoridation to be mandatory. Currently in Hamilton, the majority of individuals drinking city water have not given their informed consent but may end up being forced to ingest a dental treatment with doubtful benefit (if any).

Fluoride does not work by swallowing.

It has been known since 1999 when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) concluded that the predominant mechanism of action is topical. “Laboratory and epidemiologic research suggests that fluoride prevents dental caries predominantly after eruption of the tooth into the mouth, and its actions primarily are topical for both adults and children.” http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5014a1.htm

This medically well established fact is ignored by Dietitians NZ in their support of water fluoridation as a dental treatment where fluoride doses cannot be controlled and there is no mechanism for monitoring the whole-of-body effects on individuals.

Arvid Carlsson, Nobel Prize winner for Medicine in 2000, who successfully fought against fluoridation in Sweden says “fluoridation goes against all principles of modern pharmacology. You have your teeth there, they are available to you, just brush them.”

For these reasons, the vast majority of the world does not fluoridate their water including Japan and 97% of Western Europe. Israel has recently announced they will cease water fluoridation in 2014.

A growing number of doctors, dentists and scientists in New Zealand, many of whom are post-graduate qualified, are questioning the safety and effectiveness of water fluoridation.

We call on Dietitians NZ to do their own research instead of relying on the Ministry of Health whose credibility is at stake if it were to admit it was wrong about the obsolete practice of fluoridation.
