CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Could fluoride be removed from the DuBois water supply? City Council members are researching the possibility after a recent council meeting, where the topic was discussed.

Officials are currently investigating the impact such a move would have on the water system and the community. The decision to look into the matter comes as city leaders said they are receiving mixed feedback from residents.

While the council has voted to move forward with research, officials emphasized that the decision will not be made lightly.

Ben Kafferlin, interim manager for the City of DuBois, said the removal of fluoride is not a quick or private administrative action. The process involves multiple steps to ensure transparency and regulatory compliance with water system permits.

Kafferlin explained that the city would need to engage with the community directly before any changes occur.

“There is a big public process that we would have to go through to actually remove the fluoride from water,” Kafferlin said. “So it would look something like having a series of public hearings where we would hear from the public and then actually draft up a permit change. So certainly not a private or quick decision.”

The discussion in DuBois follows similar debates in neighboring areas. The Clearfield Borough Council held a similar discussion regarding the use of fluoride in its water supply approximately one year ago.

Residents will have the opportunity to provide input during a public process before any decision is finalized. The city would need to hold public hearings and draft a permit change to move forward with the removal.
