MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A lengthy landmark federal case against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over the safety of adding fluoride to the public water supply has come to a head with a federal court handing down its ruling.

The presiding judge ruled Fluoridating Drinking Water Poses an “Unreasonable Risk” of Reduced IQ in Children. Since the EPA did not prove how much fluoride is safe to drink the judge ordered the agency to engage in rulemaking to address the unreasonable risk posed by current fluoride levels in drinking water, which may range from increased public warnings to potential bans. The court was presented with an overwhelming number of newly publicized studies that suggest consuming fluoride poses a threat to developing brains.

Fifty-two published studies scrutinized by the National Toxicology Program (a division of Health and Human Services,) show that babies born to mothers who drank fluoridated water during pregnancy, and newborns fed formula mixed with fluoridated water, have lower IQs and other brain impairments than those who don’t consume it. The EPA actually agreed with those findings in court.

The practice of adding fluoride to public water supplies started in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1945 to help prevent cavities. Despite concerns over its safety from the start, the U.S. is now providing fluoridated water to more than 200 million Americans, more people than the rest of the world combined.

So, what’s the process for eliminating/reducing fluoride in the water supply and can children maintain good oral health without it Integrative Biological Dentist, Dr. Griffin Cole, joined us on Studio 10 to answer these questions:
