After a half-century of adding fluoride to Windsor’s drinking water, Monday marked the official end to the practice.
The Windsor Utilities Commission says it ceased adding fluoride after receiving the go-ahead from the ministry of the environment.
That follows a council decision in January to remove it from the drinking water, which also supplies residents of Tecumseh and LaSalle.
Prevention of tooth decay was the reason for adding it in the first place.
Fulvio Valentinis was one of the councillors who voted against fluoride’s removal.
He says it’s not unheard of for a decision to be overturned, if citizens aren’t satisfied.
“If residents have a strong position, they’ll have to take initiative, put pressure on council the same they would do on any particular issue,” says Valentinis. “Then it would be up to councillors who want to change their position to bring it forward.”
