Gretna: Fluoride barely passes

Gretna water customers have something to smile about, but just barely.

A strangely written ballot question required the following introduction in bold face type: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. The decision — add fluoride to the water or not.

Just six votes separated yes from no. And in this case, a “no” vote means add the fluoride to the water. In total, 264 voters chose fluoride, 258 opposed it.

The vote was the city’s second on the question and was required after a state law was passed that requires fluoride unless voters say otherwise.
