Hundreds of households in the Guia de Isora area of Tenerife were affected by a water warning.

Parents were advised not to allow children up to the age of eight to either drink the local water or eat foods either prepared or cooked in it.

The alert, involving the Fonsalia and Alcalá area, came as a result of a problem originating from the desalination station at Aripe. There had apparently been ‘a series of failures’ at the plant which has hundreds of pipes coming from several galleries. A wrong combination produced water with too much fluorine.

The water quality was not considered dangerous but experts advised it was not suitable for young children.

The problem was being addressed with urgency but it was not known exactly when the alert would be lifted.
