HANNIBAL (WGEM) – The Hannibal Board of Public Works announced on Wednesday that they are preparing to discontinue feeding fluoride into the city’s water system.

HBPW officials said the fluoridation will stop no sooner than 90 days after Feb. 19. HBPW said the state requires a minimum of 90 days to notify customers when there is a discontinuation of fluoride.

On Feb. 4, Hannibal City Council passed a resolution that requested HBPW to cease its fluoridation.

HBPW said they remain neutral about the discontinuation, but they encourage customers to educate themselves on the effects of fluoride in drinking water.

Customers also are being asked to provide feedback online.

HBPW said all feedback will be shared with the mayor, City Council and HBPW board members.
