ORLANDO, Fla. – Stand for Health Freedom is hosting an “Independence from Water Fluoridation” event to celebrate the statewide ban that effectively halted the practice across Florida.
The celebration marks the culmination of a movement that saw 22 cities and four counties vote locally vote against fluoridation since November 2024.
The event, scheduled for Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Florida Water Bar in Orlando, will bring together residents who spoke up across the state, along with local leaders vocal on the issue, including Longwood Commissioner Matt Morgan and Bartow Mayor Trish Pfeiffer.
Health Freedom Advocate Justin Harvey, with Stand For Health Freedom has been a leading voice in the effort.
“It was clear state legislators saw the local momentum which prompted them to propose a bill banning fluoridation statewide,” Harvey said. “Our motto was that water is meant to hydrate not medicate, so we are very grateful that this risky, outdated practice has come to an end in Florida.”
The movement’s success, according to Harvey, was influenced by a September 2024 federal court ruling, public statements from U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and official guidance from Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo.
He said those factors led local officials to recognize the importance of choice, adding, that “no matter what side of the science you lean on, even if you think fluoride is great, it’s wrong to force it on the people who don’t want it.”
“If COVID taught us anything, forced medical interventions are a bad idea. People deserve a choice,” Harvey said.
Addressing concerns that dental health might decline without fluoridation, Harvey pointed out that “95% of the world doesn’t fluoridate water, nor did 40 entire counties in Florida before the state ban, and we don’t have a dental crisis in any of these areas.”
Harvey expressed pride in the residents who participated in local meetings and gratitude for city council members, mayors and county commissioners who listened to their constituents.
“Never doubt that a small group of dedicated people can get a neurotoxin out of the local water supply, indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has,” Harvey said.
SB 700, pushed through the Legislature by Sen. Keith Truenow, Reps. Kaylee Tuck and Danny Alvarez, and spearheaded by Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, bans fluoride in the state’s drinking water, among several other provisions. It takes effect July 1.
