The Environment Agency of Iceland had found that the level of fluorine in grass in the vicinity of the Alcoa aluminum smelter in Reyðarfjörður, East Iceland, is 43.6 micrograms on average; considerably higher than the guideline limit of 40 micrograms.
The testing was made in late June and the results are similar as in the agency’s testing on June 10-11 when the average fluorine level was 46.7 micrograms, ruv.is reports.
In some locations the fluorine level was very high: around 100 micrograms.
Fluorine pollution was found to be above the guideline limit in the summer of 2012 and close to it last summer.
The agency will repeat the testing on four other occasions this summer.
