Lee County commissioners became the latest Florida government to vote to remove fluoride from public drinking water on Tuesday with a unanimous vote.

With Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo in the chambers and speaking in support of the move, commissioners were lauded in advance by some and accused by others of having made their minds up beforehand.

Despite the continuing support of the American Dental Association and the American Medical Association, Ladapo described the science as settled.

He said he was ‘stupified’ by the amount and clarity of the evidence that flouride does harm to everything from intelligence development in children to cardiac health among the elderly.

“Why on Earth would we continue?” he asked.

The vote to end fluoridation was 5-0.
