Dear Editor: Fluoride is the new lead, and at least some of our population is being permanently harmed by ingesting fluoride.
The U.S. government has finally released its systematic review on fluoride, revealing its neurotoxicity to children’s brains at total fluoride exposure levels of 1.5mg/L and above. This groundbreaking study released by the National Toxicology Program shows that fluoride lowers IQ and increases ADHD rates in our children.
Alarmingly, many people in areas with 0.7mg/L fluoridated water have much higher urinary fluoride levels due to additional sources like dental products, pesticides, foods and pharmaceuticals. Some individuals show fluoride levels equivalent to living in areas with 1.5mg/L or higher in drinking water. Wisconsin has communities like Oconto drinking natural levels of 2.0mg/L of fluoride.
There’s no effective way to control fluoride intake. Pregnant women, diabetics, kidney patients, athletes and outdoor workers often consume more water, potentially exceeding safe fluoride exposure levels.
Given these findings, it’s crucial that we act. We call on local water authorities to reassess fluoridation practices, halt the optional fluoridation water program and consider safer alternatives for dental health. Many dentists who claim fluoride in water benefits poor people do not accept Medicaid and Medicare patients in their practice. We urge policymakers to fund more research on fluoride’s effects at lower concentrations.
Most importantly, we ask for increased public education on fluoride sources and potential risks, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their fluoride exposure.
