LYNDEN — The Lynden City Council is now moving closer to removing fluoride from the public water system. On Oct. 21, council voted 6-to-0 to approve the creation of a new ordinance to remove all fluoride from Lynden’s water.

Council Member Mark Wohlrab was not present.

The ordinance also came attached with a directive to issue notice to all of Lynden’s municipal water customers that council might remove fluoride from their water supply.

The ordinance comes as the council slowly moves towards bringing the matter of fluoride back to a vote.

Back in July, the council moved to remove fluoride from Lynden’s water system in a 4-3 vote before Lynden Mayor Scott Korthuis, in a controversial move, vetoed the vote, citing a lack of overall evidence of any actual harm that comes from fluoride’s inclusion in the water supply.

Since then, a federal court in California ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to make substantial steps toward further investigating the potential health risks of currently approved levels of fluoride in water systems throughout the United States. Although the presiding judge over the case “does not conclude with certainty that fluoridated water is injurious to public health,” the Lynden City Council still cites the ruling as one of the reasons for why they wish to pursue the fluoride issue further.

Lynden City Council will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4 in the City Annex Building, 205 4th St.

A copy of the agenda will be available no less than 24 hours before the meeting at lyndenwa.org.
