LYNDEN — On Oct. 7, the Lynden City Council unanimously voted to bring fluoride back to the discussion table. The motion to initiate the vote was made by Council Member Gary Bode, who was one of the four council members who voted to remove fluoride from Lynden’s public water system earlier this summer.

Back in July, council voted to remove fluoride from Lynden’s public water system. The vote came after weeks of heated debate regarding some of fluoride’s alleged health risks. In a 4-3 vote, council moved to remove fluoride from Lynden’s water. However, Lynden Mayor Scott Korthuis vetoed the vote when he cited a lack of sufficient evidence backing claims of fluoride’s negative health impacts.

According to Lynden City Administrator John Williams, council will now need to create a new ordinance and bring it to the next city council meeting. This will then reinitiate the 90-day interval leading to a new vote.

Lynden City Council will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21 in the City Annex Building, 205 4th St. A copy of the agenda will be available no less than 24 hours before the meeting at lyndenwa.org.
