Fluoridation of Mackay’s water supplies will again be stopped due to equipment problems.

The council says water will not be fluoridated from Sunday, with the work expected to take 10 days.

In June, the facility was shut down after equipment failure, that followed a period of several months where fluoride was not added due to dust concerns.

The director of water and waste services, Jason Devitt, says this issue is not linked to earlier problems.

“The equipment that came in was actually separate to the hopper, so that’s basically been in place for about four years,” he said.

“The expected life of that should be 10 years plus and we’re just seeing some wear and tear there around the joints of the hopper, so we wanted to get in and do some repairs now.”
