OSAGE BEACH, Mo. — Osage Beach Mayor Michael Harmison is asking for the public’s thoughts on discontinuing a drinking water practice that began in the 1940s.
On Mayor Harmison’s Facebook page, he provided health concerns associated with fluoride in water. Here is his post:
The City of Osage Beach is considering discontinuing the practice of adding fluoride to our community drinking water system. Adding fluoride to drinking water began back in the 1940’s. At the time, it was difficult for many to get enough fluoride for quality dental health as fluoride was not readily available in tooth paste, mouth wash, regularly dental care, etc. The city of Osage Beach began adding fluoride to our water system in the 1990’s. Over the years studies have found health concerns associated with fluoride in water to include dental fluorosis (spots on the teeth), skeletal fluorosis (leading to bone fractures and joint pain) thyroid problems, neurological issues and lower IQ in children. At this time the states of Florida and Utah have banned the addition of fluoride to community drinking water with several other states in the process of doing the same. 98% of Western Europe, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Sweden and Norway have all opted out of adding fluoride to their water due to health, legal or ethical concerns. It can be argued that adding this pharmaceutical to citizens drinking water is in their best interest for proper dental and oral care. What are your thoughts?
