MONROE, Wis. (WKOW) — Fluoride will remain in Monroe’s water for the time being, after the mayor vetoed the common council’s repeal of the city’s fluoridation code.
The mayor told 27 News she stopped the plan to remove fluoride from Monroe’s drinking water because she thinks the benefits of fluoride are well documented, and she wants to protect the health and well-being of the community.
“Ensuring the health and safety of our residents is my utmost priority,” Mayor Donna Douglas said.
Mayor Douglas said more than 100 people contacted her, asking her to veto the measure.
The Monroe Common Council voted to remove fluoride in a 4-3 vote on Monday.
The council can override the mayor’s veto with a supermajority vote at its next meeting on March 17. At least six council members would need to vote in favor of overriding the veto.
