Montreal mayoralty candidate Denis Coderre is dipping his toe into the debate over the management of the water filtration plants in Pointe Claire and Dorval and fluoridation of the city of Montreal’s drinking water.

Dorval and Pointe Claire are fighting to keep control over their water treatment plants. A provincial exemption allowing that control expires at the end of the year. Management would be transferred to the Montreal agglomeration The West Island cities are concerned about what will happen to the quality of their water and the costs of getting that water, since their water is fluoridated and Montreal’s is not, and they use a metering system while Montreal charges a flat rate.

Coderre said he’s open to discussion.

“It’s not just a matter of the quality of water, it’s who’s in charge of what and they all want to protect their little turf. If ain’t broke, why fixing it?” Coderre told CJAD 800 News.

Coderre also said he wouldn’t rule out fluoridating Montreal’s water supply.

“My first impression is, I would be in favour of it,” Coderre said, but added there are a lot of studies to look at first.
