A Mount Gambier man has walked free from court after being arrested for obstructing access to Mount Gambier’s water pumping station.

The man chose to stand trial, rather than pay a $21 fine.

Alex Young was arrested for obstructing the path of contractors on their way to build a fluoridation plant at Mount Gambier’s Blue Lake.

He spent the night chained to the site’s entrance in protest over the impending addition of fluoride to the city’s water supply.

Mount Gambier magistrate Bill Morris ruled Young’s six hours in police custody was adequate punishment.
